Note: Krantidhara (Coup de Grace) is the story of Pratigyan played by Gargi Mohanty, who struggles with her political career and has to face the male chauvinist society gallantly. Plot: It’s the story of a young woman who lives in a village and confines herself to the day-to-day household activities ranging from serving her father- and mother-in-laws, attending her two kids to satisfying her Sarpanch husband, until one day she was forced by her hubby to be the Sarpanch.
A suitably educated woman, Pratignya never gives a chance to anyone to complain about her and it’s evident from her daily routine. Though she goes to bed late, she wakes up in the wee hours to start her daily chores starting from morning ablution and performing traditionally mandated family rituals followed by preparing breakfast to getting her two school-going kids ready for their classes. Both her paterfamilias and materfamilias who are in their sunset years are suitably taken care of by their daughter-in-law. Her entire day passes by all these routine household works that ends after all the members go to bed. As acknowledged by the entire village, she is the ideal daughter-in-law (Bohu) that one could wish for.
As per her, it was a quirk of fate that she was to marry Abhoy, a typical male chauvinist and crooked village level politician who was a branded rowdy in his college days. Buttressed by local lackeys, reprobate Abhoy leaves no stones unturned to occupy the position of Sarapanch repeatedly and dishing out gratuitous work orders to petty contractors in lieu of inducements, which is rather his share. Their two children- an 11-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl are mollycoddled by their grandparents in their misplaced notion of dispensing love, which is vociferously objected by Pratignya, but to no avail. Even her in-laws tend to condone Abhoy’s lapses as being pragmatic. Hitherto and throughout her married life, Pratignya continues to persevere in her gentle efforts to reform her husband that has been rebuffed many times with utter scorn.
As it stands, life goes on at a somnolent pace in the village. And all of a sudden, a gazette notification is issued by the government declaring fifty percent seat reservation in Panchayat level. With this Abhoy’s seat also falls under the reserved category like many other Panchayats and this is like a bolt from the blue for our sarpanch who is not ready to let go the power from his hands. Following a great deal of brainstorming among his supporters, it is decided unanimously that Pratignya be fielded as the candidate for Sarpanch, as it will serve the purpose of Abhoy who will be the de facto head while his wife will act as a proxy. Notwithstanding her protests, Pratignya is coerced enough to file her nomination papers. Though the electorates welcome her candidature and her husband’s departure from village politics, they remain doubtful about the practicality. More cynical among the villagers are quite skeptical about their apprehension that Pratignya in all likelihood will be used like a puppet by her husband.
